It may be 17 degrees outside today (let’s not even discuss what it feels like with the wind chill) but Spring is right around the corner. For college kids and those of us who have children in school, this season is kicked-off annually by Spring Break – that one week each year that everyone is out of school and looking for something to do or somewhere to go. It is with this in mind that we created this list of places, not too terribly far away, that would be great Spring Break destinations!
Just one state over, Fayetteville is less than a 4-hour drive from Norman, OK. Not only are there fun things to do in Fayetteville itself, but this town is also the hub to many exciting things to do around Northwest Arkansas. Checking out the Crystal Bridge Museum is a must, but that is just but one of the enjoyable things to do here during Spring Break.
Nestled in the Ouachita Mountains, Hot Springs has a variety of great things to do. From its many outdoor attractions, including naturally heated springs, hiking and lakes to the historic bathhouse district, shopping and other inside attractions. There is something for everyone in this town. Note: If you love BBQ, you’ll have to check out McLard’s Bar-B-Q, which is supposedly former president Bill Clinton’s favorite BBQ joint.
Colorado Springs is a fantastic place for those who enjoy hiking and beautiful scenery. You’ve got Pike’s Peak, the Cave of the Winds, and the Garden of the Gods for those who love outdoor adventures. There is also a good share of shopping in unique boutiques and one-of-a-kind shops. If you or your children love arcade games, stopping in at the Penny Arcade in Manitou Springs is a must.
So much to do in Denver, you could spend the entire Spring Break here and still not see and do everything this place has to offer. From the Butterfly Pavilion where you can immerse yourself in the lush ecosystem as you discover tropical butterflies, birds, plants, lizards, and sloths to seeing real dinosaur tracks at Dinosaur Ridge. Denver is a destination that should be on everyone’s travel list, even if you cannot make it for Spring Break.
If you are a “foodie”, New Orleans may be a place for you. While there are tons of things to do, from historical to party central, art and everything in-between – the food is what keeps many people coming back. Muffulettas, gumbo, Beignets & chicory coffee, bananas Foster, po-boys, jambalaya, and some of the best seafood you’ll ever taste are all features of the New Orleans foodie experience. For those who love architecture and the arts, New Orleans will not disappoint.
Branson has tons of family-friendly entertainment and live shows. Zip lines, carnival type rides, Ripley’s Believe It or Not, wax museum, and so much more! You’ll get the feeling of going back in time to more “simpler days”. Enjoy shopping and fun themed food restaurants as well. You’ll also want to check out Dolly Parton’s Stampede while visiting Branson.
Dallas offers a lot of attractions from outdoor activities, to museums, festivals, nightlife, shopping and shows. You’ll not be short-handed on things to do or see if you choose this city for your Spring Break destination, that is for sure! Trace the tracks of the motorcade where President Kennedy was assassinated and come up with your own theory on whose was behind it all at The Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza or try your hand at racing against your friends at SpeedZone. Whatever you decide to do while in Dallas, you are sure to enjoy yourself!
When you think of San Antonio you probably think of the Riverwalk and of the Alamo – both of which are great spots to see when in this town, however; that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to all San Antonio has to offer. There are a lot of historic places to see here, as well as great outdoor things like the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch.
The best thing about all these Spring Break destination options is that you can reach all of them within an 8-hour drive or less from Norman, OK, with the exception of New Orleans that requires closer to 11 hours of windshield time to get there. So why not load up the family, or a group of friends, and make this Spring Break an adventure to remember? Just be sure check out your vehicle first to ensure its roundtrip ready!
